In this music video, Greenday explore mental health issues and how they can be overcome. We are trying to do this in our video as it is implied that our protagonist has depression and anxiety disorders, however, she cannot find a way to cope with it. In 'Basket Case' they use music as a way to escape from the world they are trapped in. In their world they seem to be quite violent, at 2:20 this is demonstrated.
Also, when they play together, it gives the impression that they are separate from the other patients. The other patients are wearing white hospital coats and masks which gives the impression that the band are seeing them in a different light which is similar to our music video as our protagonist sees other people as they really are and not what they appear to be. Also, it shows the difference between the band and the other patients. It shows that the band wants to be more individual and independent.
The other patients are in black and white which makes it seem that they have no real personality and they are hidden away behind the masks they wear, which could symbolise them hiding behind a personality that is not their own.
In 'Basket Case' the fact that the band are seeing something different to everyone else is highlighted by the strange, very bright colours around them. The bright greens, pinks and blues give the whole video a surreal effect, it makes us think about drug infected minds which is backed up later on in the video when one member of the band is given drugs to help him. However, the woman in the giving the drugs looks like a stereotypical horror film nurse. Most nurses often look caring and helpful however, this nurse seems to be sinister and overpowering. She seems untrustworthy.
The other staff helping the band don't seem to care about what they do. For example, at 2:55, after one member of Greenday breaks a window and disappears. A member of staff comes in and calmly looks out the window. This is suggesting that they aren't bothered what happens to the patients, its as if they aren't really important.
The drums that are used in this video are broken and taped up as if the staff/the people who fund the home don't care enough to get better instruments. Also, it makes the audience think that the band aren't trusted. This is also shown by the microphone being taped to the stand.
Although, Greenday seem more comfortable whilst they are playing instruments, it seems that they are unsure how to use them correctly, at 0:40 the guitarist doesn't seem to understand how to hold or play it.
At the end of the video, the band are shown through a metal gate which gives the impression that they are trapped (like in our own video) and forced to do what the carers want or perhaps that because of their illness, they are trapped inside their own minds. Because we see the gate being closed, it makes the audience think that the band had the opportunity to escape but missed it. It makes us think that they will never get another chance. Which also links in with our own video as our protagonist sees death as her only escape, however, in her case, there is no going back.
